Cool article!
I usually do my warm up programm all on my own. Running a few laps, doing some stretching and stuff while my team mates get dressed. When they’re ready, I usually pick one of them to hit some balls at me. Starting nice and slow, we do rounds of like 10 balls, then doing the next point on my imaginary list.
Normally my team mates make some warm up excercises too, then doing some 2-on-1s or some short corners with me.
Five minutes before the game starts, I go and find myself a quiet corner off the field. I then try to relax and focus on the upcoming match, maybe listen to some music or think of some good saves from the last weeks.
Worked quite well up to now…;)

Great tips, I just wish that half the time they’d let me warm up, if it’s a school match everyone’s late getting to the bus so we get there with little time to spare. The coach expects me to kit up in thirty seconds and when it comes to shots, it’s shooting practice for the forwards. Then they wonder why I let stupid shots in. I always play a better game when someone warms me up, properly. I don’t think some players realise that shooting with the intention of scoring is not how you warm a keeper up, warming your keeper up is just as important as warming your forwards up, they win the match, but we stop you form losing it.

Common problem. I took me years to teach this lesson to my team mates! Stay confident and don’t let them rush you. They depend on you and your skills!

Hi Grim, great comments, good luck with the book! Remember, keep it simple, and lots of people understand diagrams or practical demos better than written words.
This is only my second season as goalie, having been a field player for the last (not going to specify) number of years. Loving it, have finally found my vocation, but also finding out what a neglected species the goalie is. Will be more assertive on the warmup now, for a start. Also (being an Aussie) basking in the Kookaburras victory in the World Cup. Now there were some saves…

Hi Grim, my name’s Francesco and i’m an italian goalkeeper and a student of sport science.i found your articles very interesting and useful for our work! in my experience in italy i’ve sometimes seen a bad approach to goalkeeper’s warming up, that sometimes is considered not so important as it should be! your articles instead could be a simple but complete step by whom start and develop a “goalkeeper science”. hope to read again other interesting articles about our world!
p.s. in this article there is a photo whith me! it’s the second from the top of the page (i have blu and orange obo legguards). it was in the 2008 olimpic qualifier in japan i was there with italy national team! were you there and took the picture?
bye, Francesco.

Please Note: We are not big on rules around OBO, in fact we have broken a few in our time. But please; keep it positive never negative, keep it helpful never personal and always show respect. Cheers Simon B
