I now use a outfielder stick after previously using a keeper stick. I felt that there wasn’t much rebound with my keeper stick therefore when making a stick save the ball would just fall to the ground or even into the net. With my regular stick (Kookabura Fever), The ball will actually bounce off my stick over the cross bar.
I’ve seen the quite amazing rebound of the OBO Fatboy but prefer a larger coverage area than the Fatboy and a regular shaped head as I am too a rather offensive keeper.

Hiya
Interesting article, I have been looking at getting a new stick, been using a mercian keepers stick for the last 12 years or so but have broken 2 in the last year. I liked the shape of it, but agree that keepers sticks don’t have a great rebound and make clearances difficult.
I was contemplating an obo composite and was wondering what people thought of the fatboy? The fatboy seems to be a good combination of the two….

Fatboy is great if u like the keepers head and a short shaft

What about square handle sticks? I have been using one for a number of seasons and will never go back to a round handle stick. I always know that the face of the stick is in the right spot to make a save.

thanks for the name check, but don’t actually use an out field stick as i can’t get them down flat on the back hand….. so use a Mercian bendy thing. Will happily use an obo fat boy if you send me a couple though… cheers. hendy

I noticed at the Champions Trophy yesterday that all the keepers were user outfielder’s sticks.

USed an old Slazenger flick when I started out nearly 20 years ago, but converted to Zig Zag (now Mercian) and had them ever since – love a short handled stick (30″) and have three grips on. Never got on with the flat sticks, but would have a look at an OBO fatboy.

i currently use a taurus indoor stick and have found the ‘flatness’ works on the ground where i can deflect it anywhere. And its only when i stop the ball with a not so good technique that the ball goes into the net. And as for power i haven’t had a problem with that yet. :)

I am using a tk (keepa) goalie stick right now. The heaviest goal-stick on the market and I am quite happy with it. It has both the strength to use in an aggressive style and the big curve and flatness for deflecting balls. But the stick is something very personal to every goaltender, everyone has his own style and needs.

I use a stick from the 1970′s! It is solid without being too heavy and has the larger head customary for those times. I find it good for balance and not easy for a hard hitter to push out of the way. I should probably say that I’m not playing highly competitive hockey …

Please Note: We are not big on rules around OBO, in fact we have broken a few in our time. But please; keep it positive never negative, keep it helpful never personal and always show respect. Cheers Simon B
